Endemic Stories from San Cristóbal Island

Through collaboration with illustrators from AMAZANKA in Cuenca, we are building a collection of storybooks called the Enchanted Adventures Collection. Thoughtfully printed on recycled paper, these beautifully illustrated, bilingual stories inspire guardianship over the endemic wildlife that shares our home while sharing the stories of real San Cristóbal islanders. Explore our growing collection of tales below, with another exciting adventure launching soon.

Pepe, the Galápagos Petrel

Our newest storybook follows the first stage of life of the endangered Galápagos petrel, an endemic bird that spends its first 90 days underground in complete darkness before taking flight over the open ocean. At Cerro Petrel in the highlands, Pepe Mora cares for our petrel protected nesting site, inspiring us to name this character after him. Through Pepe the Petrel’s journey, children and families learn what it means to protect vulnerable species.

When I read [“Pepe’s Promise”] with my children, I feel we grow closer to Galápagos. Reading is such a valuable way to nurture their love for nature, and this book makes it possible in a very special way.”

Letty, the Leocarpus de Darwin

Meet Letty, our island mascot inspired by Leocarpus darwinii, a rare endemic plant found only on San Cristóbal. In this first story of our Letty trilogy, children discover what makes her species extraordinary and why protecting it matters. Letty has become a beloved figure across the island, with kids now greeting the real plants by her name, transforming a vulnerable species into a cherished neighbor they recognize and want to protect.

Letty’s Regenerative Garden

Letty’s journey continues! As she faces a new challenge, finding a home where she can truly thrive, young readers follow her to a regenerative garden where endemic plants, native soil, and natural cycles work together in harmony. Will Letty complete her mission to take root and flourish? And what new friends will she meet along the way, from helpful insects to neighboring plants?

Meet Letty’s Endemic Friends

In the final chapter of Letty’s trilogy, her regenerative garden springs to life with new companions all inspired by and named after real islanders: a racer snake, canary, Darwin’s finch, and two racer bees. Through these friendships, young readers discover that no plant or animal lives on its own, and every being is part of a larger web where everyone has a role to play.
